From Fashion Media to IT Leadership: Vivian’s Inspiring Career Pivot in Germany

In a vibrant new feature for “Afrodite’s Space,” we visited Vivian at her home in Düsseldorf to discuss her extraordinary journey from the heart of the Nigerian fashion industry to a thriving career as an IT communications manager in Germany. Her story is a masterclass in resilience, the power of a non-linear career path, and the unwavering spirit of Black female excellence.
The Bold Leap: From Genevieve Magazine to “Afrika Kommt!”
Vivian’s professional background is as impressive as it is unique. Before her move to Germany, she was a prominent figure in Nigerian fashion media, serving as a wardrobe stylist and an editorial executive at the renowned Genevieve Magazine. In 2021, she took a bold leap, relocating to Germany through the prestigious “Afrika Kommt!” scholarship—a program designed to connect high-potential African professionals with leading German companies. This transition from fashion journalism to the technical world of IT communications is a powerful reminder that your skills are transferable and your past experiences are your greatest assets.
Navigating Cultural Shock and the “German System”
Moving to a new country always comes with its challenges, and Vivian’s experience was no exception. She speaks candidly about the cultural shocks she encountered, from the language barrier to the experience of being “stared at” in public spaces. However, rather than letting these hurdles define her journey, Vivian used them as fuel for growth. Her resilience in navigating the “German system” and building a fulfilling life in Düsseldorf is a testament to her strength and adaptability.
Visibility as a Superpower: Taking Up Space
One of the most profound insights Vivian shares is the importance of visibility. She emphasizes that in the professional world, especially for Black women, doing “good work” is only half the battle. “You have to be intentional about being seen,” she notes. Vivian’s journey is an inspiration to every woman of color to unapologetically take up space in rooms where they are the only one, ensuring their contributions are recognized and their voices are heard.
Community as a Catalyst for Growth
Vivian is a strong advocate for the power of community. Her involvement with “Black Women in Tech (DACH)” has been a cornerstone of her integration and professional development in Germany. She highlights how finding a tribe of like-minded professionals can be a game-changer, providing not only a support system but also a platform for shared growth and collective empowerment.
Overcoming Imposter Syndrome and Embracing Belonging
Like many high-achievers, Vivian has faced imposter syndrome. However, her approach to it is transformative. She reframes self-doubt as a signal for growth—a push to step out of her comfort zone and embrace the challenges that lead to professional brilliance. Her message to every young Black woman is simple but profound: “You belong.” Whether you are transitioning careers or moving across continents, your presence in the room is a necessary addition to the global landscape.
Celebrating Black Female Excellence
Vivian’s story is a vital addition to “Afrodite’s Space.”It is a story of academic bravery, professional brilliance, and the unwavering strength of a woman who refused to be limited by a traditional career path. We are honored to share her journey and celebrate her as a shining example of Black female excellence in Germany.
