Dora’s Courageous Journey of Starting Over in Germany

From Flight Attendant to Tech: Dora’s Courageous Journey of Starting Over in Germany

For this episode of Afrodite’s Space, we sat down with Dora to talk about one of the biggest decisions of her life—leaving behind a successful aviation career in Nigeria to start completely over in Germany.

Her story is one of courage, reinvention, and determination. It reminds us that moving abroad isn’t simply about changing countries. Sometimes it means rebuilding your identity, learning a new language, and having the courage to begin again when the career you once loved is no longer an option.

Leaving Behind a Career She Loved

Before moving to Germany, Dora had already built a life she was proud of.

For four years, she worked as a flight attendant in Nigeria, a career that gave her purpose, confidence, and the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds every day.

She loved the structure, the responsibility, and the excitement that came with aviation. Her goal was to continue climbing the ladder and eventually become a cabin manager.

Germany was never part of that career plan.

But life had other ideas.

When she relocated through family reunification, she arrived believing she could continue working in aviation. Instead, she quickly discovered that language requirements and passport restrictions made returning to the cockpit far more difficult than she had imagined.

Starting Over Isn’t Easy

Like many immigrants, Dora suddenly found herself rebuilding a life she had already established.

The confidence she once carried as a flight attendant disappeared almost overnight.

She had to depend on her husband for appointments, transportation, and everyday tasks. Even though he never made her feel like a burden, she struggled with losing the independence she once enjoyed.

Alongside that came isolation.

Being in a new country where people speak a language you don’t fully understand can be emotionally exhausting.

There were moments she questioned her decision to move and wondered if life would have been easier back home.

Yet despite those difficult days, she chose to keep going.

Reinventing Herself Through Technology

After receiving several rejections from German airlines, Dora reached an important decision.

Instead of fighting to return to the same career, she would build a completely new one.

Technology had always interested her, particularly cybersecurity, but she didn’t have an IT background.

Rather than seeing that as a limitation, she began researching career paths, speaking with Germany’s employment agency, and exploring retraining opportunities.

Her first application for cybersecurity funding was rejected.

Most people would have stopped there.

Dora appealed the decision.

That persistence opened another door.

She was eventually approved for a government-funded retraining program in IT system integration, giving her an opportunity to build an entirely new career from the ground up.

There Is No Shortcut to Reinvention

Today, Dora spends every weekday learning IT through a two-year retraining program that combines classroom learning with practical industry experience.

She openly admits that the journey is challenging.

Everything is taught in German.

Technical concepts require logical thinking, persistence, and continuous practice.

But she believes success isn’t about finding shortcuts.

It’s about committing to the process, even when progress feels slow.

Her story is a powerful reminder that changing careers takes time, but the investment is worth it.

Learning German Changed Everything

Although Dora studied German as an elective during university in Nigeria, moving to Germany showed her that classroom knowledge and everyday communication are very different.

She restarted her language journey from A1 and worked her way to B2 in less than a year before continuing towards C1.

For Dora, learning German wasn’t simply about passing exams.

It became the foundation for building confidence, finding opportunities, and creating a future in Germany.

Her advice is clear:

Don’t underestimate the language.

It opens doors that qualifications alone cannot.

Your past career is never wasted.

One of the most inspiring parts of Dora’s journey is how she reframed her previous experience.

When explaining to career advisors why she wanted to move into cybersecurity, she didn’t ignore her aviation background.

Instead, she connected the two.

As a flight attendant, she was responsible for protecting passengers and ensuring their safety.

In cybersecurity, she hopes to protect organizations and their data with that same mindset.

Her story demonstrates that transferable skills matter more than many people realize.

Communication, discipline, responsibility, problem-solving, and resilience never lose their value—they simply find new environments to shine.

Building Confidence Again

Perhaps Dora’s greatest challenge wasn’t learning technology.

It was rebuilding the confidence she once had.

In aviation, she never questioned whether she belonged.

Starting over meant entering classrooms where everything happened in German, struggling to express herself, and learning to believe she deserved to be there despite making mistakes.

Little by little, she is rebuilding that confidence.

Not because the journey became easier, but because she refused to give up.

Celebrating Black Female Excellence

Dora’s story is a powerful reflection of what Afrodite’s Space exists to showcase.

It is a story of reinvention, resilience, and choosing growth over comfort.

From proudly serving passengers in the skies of Nigeria to preparing for a career in Germany’s growing technology industry, she proves that starting over is never the end of the story.

It can become the beginning of something even greater.

We’re honored to share Dora’s journey and celebrate another remarkable example of Black female excellence across Europe.
