From Academic Pivot to IT Excellence: Adeyinka’s Resilient Journey in Germany

In an inspiring episode of “Afrodite’s Space,” we sit down with Adeyinka, a dynamic professional whose journey in Germany is a masterclass in resilience and the power of a proactive mindset. Her story, from navigating the complexities of the German university system to thriving as an IT infrastructure services coordinator, perfectly embodies the spirit of Black female excellence we celebrate.
The Courage to Pivot: Turning Setbacks into Success
Adeyinka’s journey wasn’t a straight line. She moved to Germany in 2019 for a Master’s degree, but like many international students, she faced significant hurdles. After six semesters and the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, she made the difficult but brave decision to drop out of her initial course. Rather than seeing this as a failure, Adeyinka viewed it as a pivot. She transitioned to Science and Technology Studies with a focus on AI ethics—a field that resonated with her passion and eventually led to her graduation and current professional success.
The “Werkstudent” Advantage: Bridging Academia and Industry
One of the key takeaways from Adeyinka’s experience is the immense value of being a “Werkstudent” (working student). She highlights how working part-time in her field while studying wasn’t just about financial support; it was her gateway into the German professional world. This hands-on experience allowed her to build a network, understand corporate culture, and develop the practical skills that ultimately secured her role in IT infrastructure. Her advice is clear: don’t just study—immerse yourself in the industry as early as possible.
Mastering the Language of Integration
While many programs in Germany are offered in English, Adeyinka is a strong advocate for learning the German language. She speaks candidly about how language is the key to true social and professional integration. For Adeyinka, learning German wasn’t just a requirement; it was a tool for empowerment, allowing her to navigate the “German system” with confidence and build meaningful connections within her community.
Representation and “Black Girl Magic” in Tech
As often the only Black woman in high-level professional settings, Adeyinka carries her identity with immense pride. She speaks about the importance of representation and the unique perspective she brings to the tech industry. Her success is a powerful reminder that Black women belong in every space, including the most technical and male-dominated fields. She embraces her “Black Girl Magic,” using her platform to inspire other women of color to pursue their ambitions in STEM and beyond.
Advice for the Journey: Proactivity and Resilience
Adeyinka’s message to aspiring migrants and students is one of proactivity. She emphasizes that in Germany, you must be the driver of your own success. From understanding the “no-nonsense” approach to apologies in German culture to consistently showing up and being prepared, her practical tips are invaluable. Her journey proves that while the path may be challenging, resilience and a willingness to adapt can turn any obstacle into a stepping stone.
Celebrating Black Female Excellence
Adeyinka’s story is a vital addition to “Afrodite’s Space.” It’s a story of academic bravery, professional brilliance, and the unwavering strength of a woman who refused to be defined by her setbacks. We are honored to share her journey and celebrate her as a shining example of Black female excellence in Germany.
