Addobea’s Jollof Journey

From Ghana to German Supermarkets: Addobea’s Jollof Journey

In a vibrant interview with Miz Wenny, Addobea, a Ghanaian entrepreneur, shared her inspiring journey of bringing authentic West African flavors to mainstream German supermarkets.

Her story is a powerful testament to cultural pride, unwavering persistence, and the delicious potential of Jollof rice.

The Birth of a Flavorful Vision

Addobea, in her late 20s, embarked on her entrepreneurial path approximately four to five years ago. Her motivation was deeply rooted in a desire to celebrate her Ghanaian heritage and Black culture through food. She identified a significant void in the German market for ready-to-eat African cuisine. Recognizing the universal appeal of Jollof rice, she decided to fill this gap, leading to the creation of her signature Jollof sauce.

Breaking Through: The German Market Entry

Addobea’s journey to securing a spot on supermarket shelves was a masterclass in tenacity. She began by testing her product at weekly markets, meticulously gauging customer interest and refining her offering. When the time came to scale, she adopted a proactive and direct approach:

  • Direct Outreach: She diligently researched and contacted private supermarket owners, presenting her vision and product.
  • Overcoming Rejection: Her path was not without its hurdles. Addobea candidly recalls facing a staggering 95% rejection rate. “I wrote a lot of supermarkets and of course they said no,” she shared.
  • The Turning Point: Despite numerous setbacks, it only took one “yes” to ignite her breakthrough. Following a successful three-month trial period with a single store owner, her product officially earned its place on the shelves.
  • Scaling Up: The success of her initial placement quickly led to an offer for a second location. Today, Addobea’s products are proudly available in three Rewe supermarkets across Berlin.

A Taste of West Africa: Product Lineup

Addobea currently offers two distinct products that capture the essence of West African cuisine:

  1. Jollof Sauce: This versatile sauce serves as an authentic base for preparing Jollof rice at home and has quickly become her most popular item.
  2. Sobolo: A traditional hibiscus drink, Addobea’s rendition features a unique blend of ginger for a spicy kick, pineapple, cloves, and agave syrup as a natural sugar alternative.

The Entrepreneurial Roller Coaster

Addobea aptly describes her entrepreneurial journey as a “roller coaster,” a sentiment familiar to many solo business owners. She openly discusses the emotional highs and lows:

“One day something bad can happen and you’re super down… then you see a text of a customer ‘oh I love your Jollof’ and then you get super hyped.”

Before fully committing to her business, Addobea had a successful career in a drugstore, progressing from an apprentice to a store manager. It was during her two-year maternity leave that she discovered the profound freedom of working on her own terms, solidifying her resolve to pursue entrepreneurship full-time.

Empowering Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

When asked to offer encouragement to those hesitant to pursue their dreams, Addobea provided powerful and pragmatic advice:

“The best thing you can do is literally… to follow your dream… the worst thing that can happen is you’re gonna regret… just think about it, if I follow it, what’s the worst thing that can happen? And if you can’t do it full, then just do it like me and start small.”
