From Nigeria to Germany: Cynthia’s Journey to Citizenship, Tech Success, and Confidence
Some stories stay with you — not just because of the milestones reached, but because of the heart, strength, and intention behind every step.
This is one of those stories.
I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down once again with Cynthia — a dear friend, a source of constant encouragement, and a woman who continues to inspire our community. The first time I interviewed her was three years ago, shortly after she landed her first full-time job in Germany. Now, she’s back, and this time with even more to share: she’s officially a German citizen, thriving in her tech career, and has become a quiet mentor to others following her footsteps.
This conversation left me deeply moved, and I know it will do the same for you.
Arriving Prepared: The Power of Planning Ahead
Cynthia didn’t arrive in Germany hoping for luck — she came prepared. While still living in Nigeria, she took active steps to understand what was needed to succeed. She began learning the German language, researched student work opportunities in her field, and even started applying for jobs before setting foot in the country.
That decision paid off sooner than expected. Just two months after arriving, she received her first working student job offer. This wasn’t luck — it was strategy, intentionality, and a strong belief that she had something valuable to offer.
As she shared this part of her story, I couldn’t help but think about how different our journeys were. Where she came with a plan, I arrived simply hoping things would fall into place. But that’s the beautiful thing about growth — no matter how you start, you can always change direction and find your path.
Challenges, Culture Shock, and Confidence
Of course, no transition comes without challenges. Cynthia spoke candidly about the difficulties of adjusting to life in Germany — especially the language barrier, cultural differences, and the climate shock that hit as soon as she landed in September.

The language, in particular, was a major hurdle. But instead of avoiding it, she leaned into the discomfort. She took a summer job where nobody spoke English, forcing her to find a way to communicate in German — not because she wanted to learn, but because she had to in order to keep her job.
Along the way, she built her confidence through books, self-talk, and surrounding herself with a supportive community — people who looked like her, understood her challenges, and pushed her forward. She reminded me of how vital it is to intentionally build relationships abroad, because unlike back home, community doesn’t always come to you. You have to create it.
The Road to Citizenship
One of the most emotional moments in our conversation was when Cynthia talked about the day she received her German citizenship letter.
For her, it wasn’t just a legal change — it was a full-circle moment.
She walked us through the requirements she had to meet: holding a B2-level German language certificate, having consistent work history for at least 20 out of the last 24 months, and being employed at the time of application. Her advice was clear — the system values contribution. If you work, pay taxes, and show that you’re here to build a life, the doors begin to open.
What stood out most was her attitude. She didn’t chase shortcuts or look for easy ways in — she built her life here through effort and intention.
Life After Citizenship: What Changed
For Cynthia, the shift was immediate and powerful.
Personally, she finally felt free to travel more — something she deeply enjoys but previously struggled with due to passport limitations. Now, with a German passport, the world feels more accessible.
Professionally, even more doors opened. She can now apply for jobs across Europe, without visa restrictions. And as someone working in tech, that flexibility means a world of new opportunities.
She beamed as she spoke about this stage of her life. You could feel the weight that had been lifted.

Growth, Mindset, and a Message to Other Women
Cynthia’s entire journey is built on one core principle: growth happens outside of comfort. She said it over and over — and it’s something I now hold close too.
She encourages women, especially those moving to a new country or trying something new, to be intentional and open to discomfort. Learn, ask questions, speak up, and apply for roles even if you don’t tick every box. She got her first job by focusing not on the tools she didn’t know, but on the skills she did have — like communication and analytical thinking — and the willingness to learn the rest on the job.
She reminded us that you don’t need to have it all figured out. If you have a dream, the very fact that you imagined it means it’s possible.
Looking Ahead: Purpose Beyond Self
Today, Cynthia is still growing in her career and exploring her passions — from teaching English and beginner-level German, to helping others navigate their own journey. She’s already mentoring other African women in tech, many of whom found her on LinkedIn simply because they saw someone who looked like them in a role they dream of.
She’s committed to giving back, and when I mentioned that I want to launch a mentorship program for women like us, she immediately said yes. That’s just who she is.
As we wrapped up, she left us with one last gem — a quote she carries with her every day:
“The secret of life is to have no fear.” — Dr. Kwame Nkrumah
What a beautiful reminder that everything we want is on the other side of boldness.
